Did You Just Lose Your Job?

There’s no doubt that these are troubling economic times.

Unemployment figures continue to rise and each day 1000’s of people are turning to the internet as a way to make extra money.

I get emails every day from people who just lost their job and they want to magically supplement a full-time income with a website, even though they have no experience making money online.

These same people are bombarded by false gurus who make outrageous claims and salespages that promises them instant riches.

Now back to the point of this post..  And forgive me because I’m a realist.

I really want to talk directly to someone whose just lost their job and thinks they can make a full-time living online.

Here’s my personal letter to a fictional person named Bill.

Dear Bill,

I am very sorry you have lost your job.  I’m sure this is a very difficult time for you.

I can see you’re very enthusiastic about working from home and making extra money online, but I want to share some information with you before you jump into this world.

1.   It’s tough.  The majority of people who try to make money online quickly fail.  And most spend more money the first six months then they’ll ever earn online. Please don’t think you’re going to be making $1,000 a week by the end of your first month.  Yes, it’s possible but highly unlikely.

2.  Please remember the old adage.  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.  It’s never been truer than online.

3.  If someone’s convinced you that you need to spend  $1000’s to get an online business going, they’re lying.  You can get started for free, but all the tools you should get will cost you less than $30 per month.

4. If you’re not truly passionate about sharing information or providing something of value you’ll probably fail.

5. Working online is a job. If you treat it like a real 40 hour per week job, you can earn a decent living with limited experience.

6. If you think something or someone sounds fishy…   Google it or them.. it probably is…

[By the way, have you noticed that no one online is good at one thing anymore? Everyone's bios say Author/Speaker/Coach/Networker/CEO/Social Media Expert/ etc... and of course, you then go to their site and see they have an Alexa rank of 19 Million. If you don't know what that is... trust me it's bad.. Now I'm guilty of this as well.. but at least when you Google me I've got some online clout to back it up.]

7.   Bill, here’s a simple task to see if you have what it takes to make it online, and all you need is Window’s notepad. Research and write a unique 300-600 word article every day for 30 days about something you’re passionate about…. if at the end of the 30 days, you have 30 decent articles.. It shows you probably have the fortitude to build a website or infoproduct that will generate passive income for you.

[Suck at writing and have $300 to spend... find a quality writer on Elance.com and work with them to create 30 articles or even an ebook on something you're passionate about.. if you can accomplish that, you've got the aptitude you'll need as well]

Now Bill, please don’t get me wrong,  I want you to succeed online.   I just don’t want you to get sucked into the cycle that so many new marketers do.

Dan’s Internet Marketing Bootcamp is an absolute must for anyone getting started. Ridiculous value for only $22. I continue to go back and watch the videos time and again. The material is very current and he covers all kinds of essential nuts and bolts stuff you gotta know to get up and running. It put me on the right course and saved me a lot of time.

Dan, this post should speak to most aspiring newbies.

I was not lured by the “get rich quick” sales tactics spun by a lot of these “gurus”.

In fact, some of them hire call centers that call you only to bully you into buying their coaching program (you know who you are).

As someone who was laid off in March, I can understand some of the bait tangled in front of some (most) folks, but…

    Let’s be realistic here people.

Dan’s teachings are no-nonsense, easy-to-understand lessons that will help anyone just getting started.

I know, because I bought his Bootcamp.
In fact, one of my blogs was featured in it.

    Best,

    -Kevin

    Dan,

In the company that I work, quite a number of people get laid off and it scared me also because this is my sole income. So, I started out to go online and realize that there is a lot of opportunity that can be tapped. I choose this path to create extra income for myself. No doubt there are some scammers lurking around but with due diligent you can find gems.

I really enjoy your bootcamp and always go back to the notes that I took when I was watching the bootcamp videos. The videos where you commented on various websites are very useful for me and I try my best to implement what you suggested in the bootcamp.

    :)

    Hi Dan,
I just had a newbie contact me asking for a quick way to make money online. As you point out- “There is no quick way to internet riches!”
Thanks for the timely article. I’m going to share it with my newbie friend.

    Dan,

That’s some very solid advice. My hope is that many will see it and pay attention.

Over the years I’ve seen many come online from all walks of life. I’ve watched as they went from one great idea to the next big thing and from following one guru to another, all the while spending their hard earned money and making nothing in return.

If I were to sum up in one word my advice to a newbie looking to make some extra money online it would have to be “focus”.

Take your time, do your research, find someone with experience you can trust to coach you and stick with it. The worst thing you can do is jump from program to program, guru to guru.

Go back to the article above and read it again. If you can stay focused on writing good articles for 30 days, than you have what it takes. And while your at it you might as well be taking Dan’s 22 Day Boot Camp. By the time you’re finished with that you’ll know how to put those articles to there best use. It’ll be the best $22 you’ve ever spent.

    To your success,

    Vic
